CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Teaching begins the process of education. Teaching is a process of giving instruction to impact facts, skills, knowledge attitudes. Interested aptitude by a knowledgeable and experienced individual(Stollberg, 2016). Therefore teaching method is a way of doing the business. The  procedure, orderliness in planning and execution of teaching proper with the appropriate integration of instructional materials. To achieve the objective at classroom level and beyond the classroom level (Stollberg, 2016). While Esu and Inyang-Abia (2014) defined teaching method as a systematic and clearly defined way of accomplishing a task.

As a method it is  a  supporting  device which a  teacher uses to emphasize his  ideas through  communication and manipulation of  other resources. Selection of appropriate methods and strategies for an instruction depends on the types of lesson. Whether practical or theoretical, the competence of the teacher to handle the methods and the nature of instruction itself.   Therefore, appropriate application of teaching methods determine the  effective realization of teaching objectives.

Commonly used teaching methods may include class participation, demonstration, discussion play way, activity method, lecture method, collaborative teaching method etc. But in the cause of this study we are going to consider only two teaching methods that help the academic performance of pre-primary school pupils which are demonstration method and play way method.

Ekanem (2012) concluded that teachers should select methods and techniques that are appropriate to the demand of their institution and to the learning needs.
